AGINS- Lit Device Short Story
Her Story
Hannah Agins
My best friend, Lillian, finally told me her story. She never talked about her life really, besides the fact that she was adopted. I told her that she could tell me anything, but whenever she almost talked to me about her past, she would get all aggressive and angry, and shake like a hand-shy dog. I eventually stopped asking, since asking was not something she was comfortable with. I didn’t ask Lily about it for the next few weeks, until Lilly told me she felt I was trustworthy enough to share her past, that she had never told anyone before. When Lilly was four months old and living in New York, her 17 and 18 year old parents felt they were too young to take care of her as a baby. According to her present mother, she was left on a door step, with snow flurries on her face, tucked in a thin, pink blanket inside of a tan, cracked basket. Her mother went outside to get a warm hot chocolate, on that freezing day. It was the kind of day when you breathed through your nose, you could feel the freezing air pass through you. On her way out, she saw a pale, crying baby, with just a couple of blonde hairs on her scalp. As shocked as she was, she did what her first instinct was, which was to take Lilly inside, and warm her up. As Lilly’s new mother, Lauren, took the 12 pound baby out of her basket, there was a note inside of it.
The note said, “This is Lilly, we couldn’t take care of her anymore, we are only 17 and 18. I’m sorry to give you such a responsibility, but we know you have the biggest heart. Thank you.”
I interrupted Lily when she was telling me the story and said, “Did your mom ever find out who sent it to her?”
“No.” Lily said, “My mom's been curious ever since, I can see it on he face, but she says the only thing that really matters is how she got blessed with such a beautiful little girl. I know, I know, It’s cheesey, but every time my mom told me this story, she would hold me as if I was the most fragile, beautiful piece of glass, as I sat on her lap.” When she told me this, I remembered the look on her face. A look that made her feel so happy to have such an amazing mother.
Going on. Lauren sat outside on her doorstep after warming Lily up, and putting her to sleep. She waited forever, just to see if Lily’s mother or father would drive by and say something. Of course, they never showed. Little did she know, that baby was the best thing that’s ever happened to her.
The next day, Lauren went to the grocery store to buy Lily food, that Lauren didn’t have at the time for her. It was snowing cats and dogs outside, so she was thinking of getting warm foods. Lauren noticed every flurry that fell on Lilly’s face, the different patterns and the way they melted.
Lauren bumped into her friend, Melanie at the grocery store, as this interrupted her thought.
“Hi Lauren, who is this?” Melanie said as she drew the attention to Lily.
“This is Lily.” Then and there, Lauren told Melanie how Lily came about.
“Real smart...why didn’t you take her to the adoption center or something?” Said Melanie.
“Because I feel a connection with this baby.” Lauren said this as she stormed away.
From that day forward, Lauren took care of Lily, as her own baby girl. She did everything to make Lily as her own, she adopted her after 1 year, and blood couldn’t make them closer than they now were.
