Literary Device Short Story
February 17th. This is the 5th anniversary of my father passing away. He worked as a banking account for a small company. That is also today’s date. It was a beautiful day outside in the city of Chicago today and it was Sunday. The only thing that kept me happy today was that the football games were on today. My favorite team is the Pittsburg Steelers. I used to live there when I was younger but we moved here because of my dad’s job. It was more convenient for him to work here in Chicago because this is where the center of his company is. When it was halftime of the Steelers game, I went outside to play basketball. I love basketball. Everyday I practice playing basketball an hour a day. Today it would not be easy. It was 85 and sunny out, and the sun was beating down on me. I thought I was gonna collapse. Luckily, I brought out a jug of water. I would shoot ten three-pointers from five spots and after every ten, I would take a water brake. I only took a quick sip after I made ten shots in the corner. Then, I made ten from the wing but I was much more tired than before. This time I was sure to drink a lot of water before I moved on. I made all of my shots from the top of the key and the other wing with ease. I thought I was Stephen Curry. It was so hot outside, I thought I was going to die. I was on the last spot and then I would go inside and take a cold shower. That was all I could think about. A freezing cold shower right after I was outside in the scorching heat, dripping sweat and my skin completely fleshed. Finally, I completed my shooting workout for the day and went inside. When I came inside, my mom said to me,
“What were you just doing? Are you okay?”
I replied, “I’m fine, I just played basketball.”
“That’s fine.” she said. “Don’t be too hyper the rest of today because you look like you went a week without food and water.” After that I went in the shower and got dressed for dinner. I could tell by the great smell that we were having pizza tonight. I was salivating so much when I was coming downstairs because I was so hungry. When I got down, I saw just what I wanted. It was my favorite pizza! I ate five slices of pizza and then I was stuffed. After dinner I watched tv for 30 minutes. Then I went upstairs to go to bed since I was so tired. As I was walking into my room, I could see my dad and I sitting on my bed. Talking about how school was and work was. How he would always come home so late and wondering if he would have to work over the weekends. How much I wished he wouldn’t have to so we could watch the football games together. Unfortunately, I came back to reality and noticed something different.
“There is something different about my room.” I said aloud. My mom heard me and said, “Nothing is there, go back to bed.” I replied, “Ok.”
I didn’t though. I took another look around the room and figured it out. There was a box on my night stand. The top of it read For Jack. That is my name! I opened the box. Inside was a piece of paper. There was an entire page of writing on it.
Dear Jack,
I am so sorry you are just reading this now, but I hope you understand why. I hope that I am still alive when you read this but there is a chance that I am there, but in your heart instead. First of all, I am not actually a banking accountant for a small company. I am an agent for an undercover business. It is called The Red Stone. When we moved from Pennsylvania to Illinois, it was because there was a man that I attempted to assassinate but I failed. I completely missed the shot. He quickly realized who did it so we had to move and stay low for a long time. I don’t know what we will do next. I will do anything to keep you and mom safe. If he does find me, then I don’t know what will happen. What I am about to tell you, mom doesn’t even know. Not even my own mom. The man who is after me is named Grant Hyde. You cannot tell anybody. But do not EVER forget this man’s name.
Love,
Dad
I couldn’t believe what I just read. I put the letter back in the box and went to bed.
